Shortly after the online gambling market opened up, the first acquisition took place, and more followed in a relatively short space of time. Notable examples include Flutter/Tombola, Entain/Betcity, and Betsson/Goldrun. Such takeovers of Dutch licence holders are permitted (both in the online and land-based gambling space), but they have not really been successful in recent years. Some acquisitions have even been abandoned prematurely or reversed. A well-known sticking point is and remains the mandatory assessment of the new owner’s reliability.
